The Umbrella Bearer from the Other Shore

A fanfic of The Dark River

He was once a gentle moonlight in Tianqi City. Yue Qingzhi, the Medicine King Valley’s foremost disciple, possessed miraculous medical skills and a compassionate heart. By living wholeheartedly by the principle of saving lives and healing the wounded, he became the embodiment of idealism in the hearts of Prince Langya and the Four Guardians of Tianqi, a cherished white moonlight. But a political upheaval five years ago left him poisoned by the Tang Clan’s deadly “Beauty’s Bone,” plunging him into an abyss.

To survive, he was forced to awaken the foreign Chenmu bloodline within him and study the forbidden art, Twin Souls Beyond the Shore. Silver hair and mismatched eyes, a coffin for an umbrella, and control over puppets of life and death. The healer who once saved the world had become a “monster” who could only stay alive with the help of a coffin. To take the calamity meant for his junior sister, he ventured alone into the Dark River and took the most desperate gamble: feeding his body to the poison, using “Beauty’s Bone” to counter the patriarch Mu Mingce’s “Snowfall on a Single Plum,” and fighting for a sliver of hope.

There, he met Su Muyu, the Dark River’s “white moonlight,” and Su Changhe, its “undertaker.” He had once been light, so he could understand the Dark River’s struggles; now he was in darkness himself, so he could guide the Dark River toward a way forward. He helped the three families of the Dark River transform and plan for the future. After Prince Langya’s death, he used his own pain as a warning to Su Changhe and Su Muyu, urging the Dark River to keep its blades sheathed and refuse to be anyone’s pawn.

By the era of The Blood of Youth, he secretly helps Xiao Se out of gratitude for an old kindness, wanting to see whether this young idealist can find a different path. Once the turmoil in Tianqi has settled and the Dark River has ostensibly been “destroyed,” he and his old friends finally withdraw from the world to live by the distant sea. Their home, called the “Weak Sea of the Mortal World,” becomes the final destination of every legend. And the moonlight that once shone upon the Dark River finally finds the dawn of its own long night, with old friends by its side.
