Stasis: Seven Days of Memories

On the surface it is a suspenseful story about "an amnesiac chasing a murderer", but at its core it is torturing each of us: If your memory could be modified, would you still be you? Su Wan's seven-day cycle is very much like our fragmented digital life, which relies on mobile phone photo albums and chat records to piece together yesterday. The spine-chilling fear when her diary had been tampered with was all too real. The most cruel thing about this book is that it allows the protagonist to give all mankind a dose of "ideological vaccine" at the expense of emotional numbness. After reading this, I just want to ask: If you remember everything but feel no warmth, or completely forget it, which one is closer to being alive?

This book holds a mirror up to the cognitive anxieties of our time. In a world where truth and narrative are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish, and where technological capabilities are increasingly approaching ethical boundaries, Su Wan's seven-day cycle may be an extreme metaphor for our common situation. Her final choice is to set up a cognitive "vaccine" for mankind at the cost of part of herself, which is both a tragic heroism and a heavy warning.
