The series follows Fourth Prince Hongli as he seeks to marry Qingying. Because her aunt has fallen from favor, Qingying can only become a side consort. After Hongli ascends the throne, Qingying is made Consort Xian. To protect herself, she asks the Empress Dowager to give her the name Ruyi. Ruyi is repeatedly framed in the harem and banished to the Cold Palace. Later, with Hailan and the others' help, she returns to the palace and becomes empress. However, Qianlong grows increasingly suspicious and fickle, and their love falls apart. During the southern tour, Ruyi cuts off her hair and is confined to Yikun Palace, where she eventually dies alone.
