In the troubled times of the Republic of China, some people were well-dressed but did ghostly things, and some were in dramas but cared about their family, country and world. The novel uses the metaphor of "actors saving the country" as a metaphor to tell the story of two seemingly different souls who, at a time when the nation is in danger, go from killing each other to falling in love, and finally compose a tragic song of troubled times together.
