During the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty, after Li Shimin's Xuanwu Gate Incident, he and Empress Zhangsun unexpectedly had a third son, Li Chengqian. The empress could bear no more children afterward, and consequently doted on Li Chengqian above all others. Thus began Li Chengqian's path to supremacy.
