Su Wan's Gre
When modern home-style chef Su Wan jolts awake after being electrocuted in front of her stove, she finds herself in the body of a destitute woman in Qingxi County, Great Jing, who has been kicked out by her husband's family. All she has is a drafty earthen house, half a sack of coarse rice, and a timid three-year-old daughter, Niannian, staring at her.
In this desperate situation, she unexpectedly unlocks a portable space. Its half-acre of black soil can grow out-of-season vegetables, its spirit spring water can bring ingredients to life, and it even contains a full set of modern kitchenware. Having once thrived in a bustling city kitchen, she grips this last lifeline. “No matter how hard life gets, I have to keep the stove burning.”
From setting up a stall at the village entrance to sell cold wild greens, to the fragrant steam rising from Su's Snacks at the market, and then to opening Evening Meals, which draws a steady stream of diners, Su Wan rewrites her fate one recipe at a time. Tender meat marinated in spirit spring water, sweet tomatoes grown in her space, and creative feasts that blend the ancient and modern do more than fill stomachs: they warm hearts.
She teaches timid Niannian to smile, strikes up an unlikely friendship with the widowed Granny Zhang, and goes from a chance meeting to standing shoulder to shoulder with the down-on-his-luck scholar Shen Yan. In the face of rumors and harassment from the powerful, she never lets go of her spatula, holding fast to her conviction as a cook: “The stove is my battlefield, and delicious food is my weapon.”
This is a story about food and redemption. As a modern soul takes root amid the bustle of ancient life, every pot and spatula brings not only the flavor of life, but a passionate life of her own.
