In the grand hall,

“Chu Heng! Do you plead guilty? Cao Lingyi, the widow, has accused you of assaulting her.”

Tears brimmed in Chu Yumin’s eyes, as if they might spill over at any moment.

“I’m innocent! This… I absolutely didn’t do it…”

“Just goes to show what kind of people come from a godforsaken place! Keep beating him!”

The constables in charge of escorting him swung their batons without hesitation. Each blow cut through the air with a whoosh.

Chu Heng was now beaten raw, his skin torn and his body drenched in blood. He was like a candle guttering in the wind. His vision blurred. He tried to cry out, but his throat felt as if it had been pierced by steel needles, and not a sound would come.

He could only part his lips slightly as blood gushed from his mouth like a spring. Chu Heng collapsed helplessly into a pool of blood, as though the whole world were slipping away from him.

With his last breath, he fixed his eyes on Zhao Huang, seated high above in the hall. His gaze brimmed with resentment and bitterness.

At last, Chu Heng slowly closed his eyes.
