Shrimp Ren is an orphan who grew up relying on the kindness of villagers, and he is inseparable from Mo Jiuyou, the village chief’s daughter. Mo Jiuyou often sneaks him food, and the two roast fish by the stream and gather herbs in the mountains, promising to protect each other forever. Though poor, Shrimp Ren is exceptionally clever. By observing how plants grow, he figures out rudimentary techniques for channeling strength, and the strange bursts of power he sometimes displays lead the villagers to call him “born with divine strength.”
