Set in the final years of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, during the reign of Emperor Shizong of Later Zhou, Chai Rong, in the Xian De era (in an alternate history after Xian De year six, where Chai Rong did not die of illness), the story follows Li Yan, a condemned prisoner inhabited by a modern soul. Using the “heavenly omen” of Youzhou’s city walls collapsing to defy fate and change his life, he gradually seizes power and assists, even influences, the great ruler Chai Rong. Together they not only recover the Sixteen Prefectures of Youyun, but also sweep away the other states, reform the system, and ultimately unify the realm and reshape China in an epic of sweeping grandeur.
