"The Witness of the Big Buddha" is set against the backdrop of old China under the oppression of three mountains, and tells the legendary life of Chongqing boy Chen DaDa (whose nickname is Gou Sheng). Chen Daring has been doing odd jobs in Chunfeng Tower since he was a child, surviving by being secretive. The only thing he misses is the half piece of sapphire pendant left by his mother. During a listening session, he had a conflict with a gangster because he was defending his seat. He was appreciated by Master Zhang, a storytelling teacher, and was given a folding fan containing fragments of the Tao Te Ching.
On a rainy night, in search of a folding fan, Chen DaDa broke into a ruined temple and broke into a Kuomintang agent chasing Heisha Shen, the bandit leader in Yingzui Mountain. In desperation, he poured urine on the agent and rescued Heisha Shen with Tiedan, a young man from the blacksmith shop. The Black Evil God invited the two of them to go up the mountain, and Chen Daring agreed to get out of the predicament, and Tiedan also went with him.
In Yingzui Mountain, Chen boldly used his cleverness to resolve the gangster's difficulties, stole wine in exchange for marksmanship secrets, and accidentally discovered the connection between the treasure cave in the cottage and the Tao Te Ching. When he went down the mountain to buy salt, he was kidnapped by kidnappers, but he cleverly plotted against the bandits and was reused by the Black Evil God. During this period, he always thought about Cuihua and Old Master Zhang in Chunfeng Tower, and gradually became aware of the cruelty of the Kuomintang.
As the current situation became turbulent, Chen boldly came into contact with the Communist Party and witnessed the Kuomintang's actions to suppress the Communist Party and distort the historical facts of the Anti-Japanese War. Under the leadership of the Communist Party, he, Tiedan, Cuihua and others participated in struggles such as mine protection and anti-espionage, and they even fought bravely in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. In his later years, Chen boldly served as the secretary of the Sichuan Coal Mine, guarding the treasures of Minjiang and the peace of the people. Under the giant Buddha next to the coal mine, he told the past to his descendants, so that the history of the Communist Party leading the people to break away from oppression and strive for light could be passed down quietly over the years.
