Modern-day overworked office drone Lin Fan dies suddenly after staying up all night playing Dynasty Warriors 8, his eyes fixed on Zhou Tai's crescent blade skin. When he opens his eyes again, he is clutching a crescent blade identical to the one in the game, and finds himself in the middle of a rebel army at the end of the Eastern Han dynasty.
The blade is his golden finger, capable of unlocking Zhou Tai's signature warrior skills. But how is he supposed to use them? He tries to learn “Crescent Moon Slash” and ends up chopping vegetables like a chef. He practices “Raging Waves” and flings himself into a mud pit. At last, he manages to pull off “Shadow on the Waves,” only to snap a branch while sneaking around and alert the entire forest full of Yellow Turban bandits.
All he wants is to keep his head down and stay alive, but the chaos of the age keeps sweeping him along. He chops wood with “Water Cutter” and gets mistaken for a prodigy; he uses “Raging Tide” to put out a fire in a military camp and becomes a hero. He even accidentally uses “Zhou Tai's Musou” to spook Lu Bu's Red Hare.
While grumbling that this lousy System is out to get him, he gradually rises from a lowly soldier by mastering the crescent blade skills. He takes down arrogant scions of noble families, tricks strategists who try to manipulate him, competes with Zhao Yun to see whose spear is faster, and crosses blades with Zhou Tai himself, though he keeps it secret and dares not admit it. Amid all the hilarious hacking and slashing, he gradually discovers that this high-martial Three Kingdoms era is far more thrilling than the game.
