Amid the smoke and fire of the Battle of Guderian Heights, young Second Lieutenant Wolfgang Arndt experiences the shock of his first battle and the loss of his comrades. In the spring of 1940, he is ordered to rebuild his crew and welcomes a new team: Max, a levelheaded Bavarian driver; Karl, a precise and cold-blooded gunner; Hans, a practical and meticulous loader; and Erich, a spirited young Berliner serving as their radio operator. These five Wehrmacht soldiers from different walks of life are bound by fate inside the same tank. They were not brothers by birth, but amid steel and smoke, they forge an unspoken understanding. Together, they grind through the dust of the campaigns in Western Europe, then take part in the far broader and more brutal Eastern Front. At last they return to the West to defend their homeland, supporting one another until, against all odds, they reach the end of the war together.
