A Wanderer at the Edge of the World

As the Western Jin moved south, the fates of immortals and mortals became intertwined. Aristocratic clans monopolized the right to cultivate immortality, leaving those of humble birth with little hope of finding an immortal opportunity. The lonely wanderer Su Lang accidentally entered a secret realm on Mount Mao and obtained the Blue Satchel Alchemy Manual. He cultivated immortality through the refined pastimes of the Wei and Jin dynasties: lofty conversation, spirited singing, and appraising people. But he triggered the Heartstring Tribulation and became entangled in complicated relationships with five women.

He fought the aristocratic clans’ puppets, foiled conspiracies between Buddhism and Daoism, and ventured into the secret realms of the Ten Continents, overturning the cultivation world’s order as a rogue cultivator. Yet each of his beloveds was separated from him by fate: one offered a sacrifice to the Wu traditions, one remained steadfast to her sect, one gave herself up for her totem, one chose a secluded life to atone, and one left to translate scriptures. In the end, he broke the ironclad monopoly, but was left utterly alone. Carrying only his memories, he wandered the world and became the legendary “Lonely Wanderer Immortal.”
