The Principles of Life and Destiny: A Modern-Language Edition

The Secret of the Golden Elixir, whose full title is The Golden Guide to Cultivating Both Nature and Life and Attaining Ten Thousand Spirits, is a comprehensive work on Daoist internal alchemy from the Ming dynasty. It is said to have been written by a senior disciple of Immortal Yin, variously identified as Yin Xi or Yin Zhiping, though its actual author is unknown. Compiled during the Wanli era and first printed in 1615, the book is divided into four collections: Yuan, Heng, Li, and Zhen. Combining text and illustrations, it systematically explains the theory of internal alchemy and advocates the cultivation of both nature and life. It integrates the finest ideas of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, and is hailed as a “secret canon of alchemy” and a model of the “unity of the three teachings.”

The Secret of the Golden Elixir is not only a practical guide to internal alchemy but also a major philosophical work exploring the essence of life. Its concept of cultivating both nature and life transcends religious boundaries, offering modern readers profound insights into balancing body and mind and exploring life’s potential. Those who wish to study further may consult it alongside such classics as The Seal of the Unity of the Three and Awakening to Reality.
