Modern college student Lu Manman is, in truth, the reincarnation of the Jade Emperor's adopted daughter, who once longed for the mortal world. Taoqi, the Peach Blossom Immortal, approaches her as part of a scheme: he hopes to use her chance to ascend to godhood to persuade the Queen Mother to remove the Immortal-Binding Talisman from his older sister.
But then the demon clan launches a surprise attack on the Heavenly Realm, and the flames of war spread to the mortal world. Forced to fight side by side, the two protect mortals and battle demons through life and death. Their schemes gradually give way to concern, and their mutual use of each other turns into deep affection. After victory in the Heavenly Realm, the Queen Mother covets the pure immortal energy within Lu Manman and tries to seize it by force.
Taoqi finally abandons his original plan and defies both the Heavenly Court and the Queen Mother to protect Lu Manman. Their powers are worlds apart. As Taoqi nears the point of having his soul scattered, Lu Manman resolutely cuts out her immortal core to give him a chance at life. She loses her mind and becomes a simple-minded girl, then falls into the cycle of reincarnation. Punished by the Heavenly Dao, Taoqi becomes an immortal, ageless
