This book is a subversive attempt to reconstruct the ancient Eastern myth - with free will versus established fate as the core, and to compose a soul-stirring tragic elegy.
This is not the Fengshen Romance you are familiar with. When Wu Sizhuo, the god of the fox tribe, used her ability as a "listener of the world" to see the conspiracy of heaven to eliminate "variables", she chose to form an alliance with Di Xin, the Shang king who was determined to reform, and teamed up with the dragon tribe who had endured for thousands of years and shouldered the secret of the origin of the five elements to embark on a path against heaven. The story ends at a dawn without the guidance of gods. The Zhou Dynasty was established and the world was governed by ritual and music. The Dragon Clan lost its godhead and the Fox Clan dispersed, all of which have become legends.
This is a funeral song dedicated to the age of the old gods, and it is also a prelude to the era of human self-awakening: on this ruins where divinity has withdrawn, humans can compose their own hymns to their heart's content.
