The protagonist, Lin Mo, is a rational, moderately well-known investigative journalist. He gets drawn into a maelstrom after the bizarre “suicide” of his friend Chen Yuan, an archaeologist. Before his death, Chen Yuan sent him an ancient “obsidian cube” made of a material unlike anything known on Earth.
