Synopsis
Ancient-era workplace comedy, lighthearted and sweet romance, a secret crush comes true
Main couple: Quirky, outspoken girl × Sharp-tongued, fatherly benefactor
Side couple: Collecting-obsessed female tycoon × Impoverished scholar with face blindness
Forced by poverty, Xu Chu takes a low-paid job at a matchmaking agency. If she can’t make money soon, she’ll have to go hungry.
As it turns out, fate hasn’t abandoned her. A customer suddenly arrives at the agency: a handsome man with fair skin and long legs, dressed in fine silks and brocade. He looks like a walking fortune.
And he seems a little familiar, though she can’t remember where she’s seen him.
Xu Chu rubs her hands together, ready to shower him with attention, but a colleague sets her up.
With a splat, she slips and ends up kneeling in front of her benefactor.
Her entrance is so thunderously awkward it makes her toes curl.
The benefactor teases her. “What, do I look like a bodhisattva?”
Xu Chu waves her hands in a hurry. “Of course not, sir! You’re such a joker!”
“Then why are you kneeling and bowing to me?”
“You may not look like a bodhisattva, sir, but you look exactly like the God of Wealth! Who wouldn’t bow a few extra times when they see him?”
Xu Chu spouts one outrageous line after another. By sheer accident, she manages to land a lucky break and truly latch onto her benefactor.
Eventually, she can’t help asking, “Sir, why did you choose me?”
Song Chengjing replies with a playful smile, “You can think of it as the God of Wealth doing his good deed for the day!”
Xu Chu is stunned. “What?”
“If you absolutely need an answer…”
“You were cheap!”
Xu Chu: Is that any way for a person to talk?
Later, on a pitch-black, stormy night, a bolt of lightning flashes, and Xu Chu accidentally pulls off her benefactor’s jade pendant.
The memory comes rushing back. Her face flushes, and she kicks the man in front of her.
Xu Chu shouts, “So you’re the lecher who spied on me while I was changing that night!”
Lecher Song Chengjing: I didn’t! I wouldn’t! Don’t make things up!
Xu Chu: Men’s words are lies, every one of them!
*
Song Chengjing will never forget the night his cousin abandoned him in the woods when he was eight.
The wind cut to the bone. As he drifted in and out of consciousness, a pair of beautiful crescent-shaped eyes appeared in the dim light.
Xu Chu’s family rescued Song Chengjing. She was seven at the time, keeping watch beside a gravestone.
She had spent her life following her father from place to place, living in a shabby little treehouse.
The little girl had a fierce temper and hard fists. She’d throw a punch at the slightest provocation, even leaving a mark on his arm.
Later, the two became friends who could talk about anything. Sadly, their happy days didn’t last.
Song Chengjing was found by his family and taken back to his old home. By then, Xu Chu had disappeared.
Searching for the light from his bleak childhood, Song Chengjing traveled far and wide, until at last he saw that light again in Luocheng.
Song Chengjing: “If you absolutely need an answer…”
“It’s simply that a young man’s secret love finally caught a glimpse of daylight.”
From bickering rivals to a perfectly in-sync team, from a “haunted house” to a wedding home, they transform one shabby little dwelling after another and put them up for sale, joining hands to build one warm home after another.
Only when Xu Chu looks back does she finally realize:
All along that long road, Song Chengjing had walked beside her with a lantern, silently lighting the way behind her.
He was also the one who taught her to protect herself and gave her someone to rely on.
