Eighteen years ago, in the depths of winter, a baby boy was abandoned outside Taihui Temple. The temple's head, Gu Xuanyang, happened to pass by, found the child, and took him in. He named him Gu Baishu and raised him as his own grandson.

Gu Xuanyang was not only the temple's head but also a renowned doctor within a ten-mile radius, famed for his remarkable skill in treating chronic illnesses. He practiced the Taiyi Inner Cultivation Method, which opened his Heavenly Eye and gave him a discerning eye for antiques. He was also skilled at combining inner energy with the Taiyi Divine Needle, often bringing the dying back to life.

From the time Gu Baishu could remember, he studied under his grandfather day and night: practicing inner cultivation each morning to build a foundation, learning medicine and identifying herbs during the day, then studying the arts of music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, as well as antique appraisal, at night. Gu Xuanyang also made sure he received a formal education and prepared for the qualifications to become a licensed Chinese medicine practitioner, giving him a solid foundation.
