I'm an assistant professor of folklore who believes in science. My girlfriend is a spirit medium who specializes in summoning fox spirits.
Our first case together was at a haunted house. I was using measuring instruments to analyze electromagnetic anomalies, while she burned incense and summoned a spirit, slapping the vengeful ghost away in one blow. I said, “That violates the law of conservation of energy!” She rolled her eyes. “Shut up. The next vengeful spirit is spawning right behind you.”
Later, supernatural cases began cropping up all over the city. A ghost fetus came to claim lives, and a corpse demon broke free of its seal. Then a hundred-year-old ghost king pinned me against a wall, and science failed me completely.
So I had no choice but to turn around and yell, “Honey, quit watching! Hurry and close the door, then send in the fox spirit!”
