In Victorian-era Kyoto, the famous detective Sherlock Holmes suffers a crushing defeat in the “Red-Headed League” case. From then on, he loses heart and sinks into a slump, and his detective agency faces closure. Watson, who became a detective novelist by writing The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, is also stuck, unable to write. Together with Professor Moriarty, who has fallen on hard times as well, and Inspector Lestrade, whose investigations keep ending in failure, the two form a “League of Good-for-Nothings.”
Unlike the downcast men, the women here are full of life. Young Irene Adler opens a detective agency across from Holmes's residence and quickly makes a name for herself, challenging the reclusive Holmes to a battle of wits. Her former classmate and chronicler, Mary, also begins writing The Irene Adler Case Files, taking on her husband Watson in a “battle of the spouses.”
Before long, Holmes retreats to a bamboo grove at the home of his old friend Musgrave. Years ago, a young girl went missing there, and Holmes failed to solve the case. When Watson visits to find Holmes and talk him into returning, he discovers that this case may be the very reason Holmes fell into his slump.
Locked rooms, vast bamboo groves, bottomless black holes... All kinds of mysteries intertwine, sending the story in an unexpected direction. In this world, can Holmes pull himself out of his slump?
