During the prosperous reign of Tiansheng in the Great Zhou, the empire appears to flourish, but beneath the surface, the imperial court and aristocratic clans vie for access to advancement, rising merchants challenge the traditional hierarchy, and jianghu factions infiltrate the economy. Su Mingtang, the legitimate daughter of the Su Silk Shop in Yangzhou, trusted an aristocratic marriage alliance in her previous life. When the Su shop was swallowed up, she jumped into the Qinhuai River, consumed by hatred. Reborn with memories of her previous life and a modern business mindset, she vows to build a commercial empire.
At the Flower God Festival, Su Mingtang disguises herself and publicly exposes the Cui family’s counterfeit silk, sowing enmity with the Cui clan, a prestigious family known for its integrity. She discovers that her father’s death is linked to the Crown Prince’s faction embezzling military funds. She joins forces with Xiao Jingheng, the disguised leader of the Third Prince’s secret guard, who is posing as a merchant. Together they take on the salt merchants and establish Suji Pawnshop, launching an inclusive financial model.
From then on, Su Mingtang embarks on a journey of cutthroat commerce, political intrigue, tangled romance, and duty to her country. She fights the Yangzhou salt merchants’ monopoly and develops the Maritime Silk Road; exposes the Crown Prince’s arms-smuggling deals with the Western Regions and the Third Prince’s profiteering from canal reforms; and goes from a partnership of convenience with the hero to a love-hate relationship, as they unravel royal secrets from twenty years ago. Along the way, she endures a forced marriage and fakes her death to escape, is pressed by the Shadow Pavilion’s leader for a secret passage map, discovers that she is descended from a princess of the previous dynasty, and faces the hero’s memory loss after he is poisoned by a Gu.
In the end, Su Mingtang joins forces with Western Regions caravans to resolve a plague crisis on the grasslands, quells a border rebellion through commerce, and replaces the old aristocratic system with a business alliance. Together with the hero, she rebuilds the Shadow Pavilion and becomes its guardian behind the scenes, leaving a legend of her own in the Great Zhou empire.
