It is based on the "Battle of Jingnan" in the Ming Dynasty and tells a mythical story: Chang'e, who was demoted to the mortal world, was reincarnated as Tang Sai'er who raised an army against King Zhu Di of Yan (later Chengzu of Ming Dynasty), while the devil in heaven was reincarnated as Zhu Di. As a result, a struggle for imperial power in the human world was interpreted into the ultimate showdown between immortals and demons in heaven. The author uses the past to satirize the present, and is emotionally biased towards the overthrown Emperor Jianwen.
