Later historians praise Chen Chan’s official achievements: reclaiming the Sixteen Prefectures of Youyun and founding a unified dynasty. They even honor him with the title of Emperor for the Ages. But historians are even more interested in the unofficial stories about this legendary emperor.

According to unofficial accounts, Emperor Gaozu Chen Chan was strikingly handsome and a famously irresistible charmer. Women throughout the land adored and pitied him. Some accounts even claim that, to unify the realm, Emperor Gaozu Chen Chan climbed into a certain empress’s bed in the middle of the night and didn’t leave the room for three days.

Chen Chan denies everything in these unofficial accounts:

“I’m not handsome. It’s all skill.”
