On the rainy lanes of Jinling during the Lantern Festival, a chance encounter between Yaoniang, a girl partly hidden beneath a plain paper umbrella, and the young man in white, Li Yu, became the beginning of an obsession that would define her life. The boy's casual joke about “hiding a beauty in a golden house” became her lifelong faith. From a village girl weaving brocade in a woodshed to Ya Ji, enduring humiliation and practicing her dancing at the Red Pavilion, she spent nine years treading the dusty world on three-inch golden lotus feet, her pomegranate-red skirts soaked with tears. All she wanted was to meet her king once more.
On the day she entered the palace to dance, the six-zhang golden lotus stage shimmered with light. After performing “Remembering the Lamplight,” she opened the plain umbrella painted with a woman in a phoenix crown, only to hear him promise to build a stage for Empress Zhou. Her dream of the golden house shattered, but she did not leave. When the Song army's iron hooves trampled Jinling and the Last Ruler of Southern Tang became a prisoner, she volunteered to accompany him as a dancer. From flourishing Jinling to desolate Bianjing, the plain umbrella concealed not only nine years of memories, but also Li Yu's drafts of poems lamenting that “the old kingdom is too painful to look back on,” and the last soul of Southern Tang.
During their years of confinement in Bianjing's cold, desolate garden, she guarded his poetic manuscripts and shielded him from the Song court's surveillance. On the night of the Double Seventh Festival, she understood the resolve to die in his poem. She poured him poisoned wine laced with anesthetic, sparing him the agony of the strangling poison, so he could leave with the dignity of the “Last Ruler of Southern Tang,” not the humiliation of a “Marquis Who Defied the Mandate.”
The plain umbrella became her coffin, concealing all the things she had never said. His poems survived, preserving the last trace of warmth from their lost kingdom. Ya Ji's life was a tragic song of love unfulfilled, but also a testament to her devotion to her homeland. She never gained a golden house and was never remembered, yet through a lifetime of companionship and her ultimate act of protection, she ensured that Li Yu's poetry and the soul of Southern Tang would never vanish from history.
