Thanks for Asking, I’m in Shanghai and Just Survived a Heavenly Tribulation

The novel’s greatest strength is its seamless “cross-genre” premise. It captures the reality of the modern-day overworked office worker, bringing elements like “shared folders,” “996 as a blessing,” “slacking off,” and “KPIs” into collision with traditional cultivation concepts like “cultivation techniques,” “demonic seeds,” “sword cultivators,” and “formations,” creating a remarkably strange chemistry. The opening line, “Thanks for the invite. I’m in Shanghai, just finished crossing a tribulation,” instantly draws readers into the story. This sense of dislocation, with “cultivation right next to the PowerPoint,” is both absurd and real, giving the novel its one-of-a-kind appeal.
