My best friend from college, a country girl who used to sleep in the bunk below mine, became a famous rural lifestyle blogger thanks to my marketing skills and completely turned her life around.
During Golden Week, she said she was coming to my city to visit and had brought me a local specialty I’d never see coming.
Afraid she’d spent too much, I quickly tried to refuse, but she smiled mysteriously. “If you won’t accept my gift, you’re looking down on me as your best friend. Just stay home and wait for your surprise!”
Touched, I eagerly prepared a whole table of food. As soon as the doorbell rang, I rushed to open the door.
There were seven or eight people behind her: her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, her nephew, and a bunch of aunts, uncles, and cousins...
Every one of them had come empty-handed, grinning at me.
I was stunned.
She linked her arm through mine with a smile. “Ta-da! Here’s the local specialty I brought you: my whole family!”
“They’re the most down-to-earth farmers in the mountains! They wanted to see the big city, and your place is so spacious. They’ll stay here for the whole Golden Week holiday. Come on, we’re best friends!”
I forced a smile and ushered everyone inside.
Over the next few days, her family used my thousand-dollar skincare products as body lotion, wore the evening gowns I treasured as pajamas, and her brother even tried to get handsy with me.
I went to my best friend in tears, but she said,
“So what if they used a few of your things? Are you really that stingy? Don’t think I haven’t figured it out. You’re just mad that I came to visit without bringing you a local specialty. I never realized how greedy you were!”
“And my brother was just joking around. You didn’t actually think he was interested in you, did you?”
I looked at her and smiled.
So it was a joke, was it?
