Night Watchman of the Desolate Village

At fifty-eight, Zhou, a former criminal investigation captain, retreats to a desolate village nearly erased from the map and opens a general store, hoping to enjoy a quiet retirement. He never expects one strange incident after another to come knocking: a crooked-necked locust tree hung with eerie dolls and chicken feathers, a well concealing a deadly black hand, and shadows that prowl through the night as evil spirits run rampant. Beneath the village lies a past no one knows, and the secret under the locust tree is tied to the truth behind every strange occurrence. By chance, Zhou becomes the villagers' “night watchman.” Relying on a detective's keen instincts and courage, he pursues the truth and quietly stands his ground against the evil spirits. In the deepest darkness, keeping those around you safe and holding fast to your principles is what gives you the strength to endure hardship. It is also the answer hidden in the quiet act of standing guard.
