The Sunflowers of the Tenement

Sixteen-year-old Lin Xiaoman thought life was just like the old apartment block where she lived: dark, cramped, and seemingly endless.

After her mother left, she squeezed into a twenty-square-meter room with her alcoholic father. She ranked near the bottom of her class and barely spoke, earning a reputation with her teachers as a hopeless case.

Then, on a day of torrential rain, she found a stray dog with a limp at the mouth of an alley and, by a twist of fate, stumbled into the studio of the elderly man living alone next door.

Paintbrushes and colors, trust and companionship, were like a faint ray of light shining into her closed-off world.

She began clumsily learning to hold a paintbrush and to find tenderness amid the cracks in her life. Little by little, she came to understand that growing up was never about blooming all at once. It meant taking one step at a time through the mud and shaping yourself into someone who turns toward the sun.
