Liu Xiaofan is an insurance salesman so ordinary he might as well be dust. After lightning strikes his phone, an app called Life Optimizer installs itself automatically. It has just one function: every night at midnight, it sends him a “precise death prediction” for the next 24 hours, along with a short video that looks like a B-movie horror trailer, sometimes terrifying, sometimes absurd. To stay alive, he has to study these error-riddled “trailers” like a puzzle game and find a way out. In the process, he discovers that the app is connected to a higher-dimensional “narrative layer,” and the “deaths” he’s been avoiding are actually scenes in a “script” written for amusement by some “god.” Liu Xiaofan decides that he won’t just survive: he’ll find the “screenwriter” and rewrite his life’s script into a happy ending.
