In Chengdu in 1940, female teacher Xu Jingzhi opened a temporary school to take in war orphans. She met Fu Chengyu, an officer who had retired to the rear due to injury. Fu Chengyu was moved by her kindness and helped her maintain the school with money and effort. The two protected orphans during air raids and lack of supplies, and also gained a love that transcended identities.
