Lin Zhixia, from a small coastal town, and Jiang Yizhou have been childhood sweethearts for twenty years and are about to get engaged. On the day he plans to propose, Jiang Yizhou buys Lin Zhixia's favorite pearl milk tea, with one-third sugar and no ice, and hurries to the agreed rocky shore with a custom-made ring engraved with "Zhixia's Boat." But before he can get there, he dies in a crash caused by a drunk driver running a red light.
Suppressing her grief, Lin Zhixia moves into the Jiang family home to care for Grandpa Jiang and Jiang Yizhou's mother. As she finishes knitting the scarf Jiang Yizhou had left unfinished and sorts through his belongings, she finds his proposal plans and a list on his computer titled "Zhixia's Little Habits." Once the elders have settled back into their routines, she puts on the white dress Jiang Yizhou gave her, wears the silver necklace he gave her in high school and the engagement ring, and jumps into the sea from the rocky shore that holds so many memories of them, dying to be with him.
Later, the two are buried together in a cemetery overlooking the rocky shore. A year later, the Jiang and Lin families erect a memorial plaque, and every year on the anniversary of their planned engagement, someone lays white roses there. Their story lives on in daisies, milk tea, and old diaries, becoming an everlasting legend of childhood sweethearts amid the sound of the waves in their coastal town.
