On the Cangxuan Continent, a martial soul is the foundation of one's standing. Battle Soul Masters use their martial souls to draw in soul power, condense soul rings, and cultivate soul skills. The strong can split mountains and part seas, while the weak are no better than ants.
On the day orphan Lin Ye awakens his martial soul, a strange phenomenon appears. His “Ancient Spirit-Devouring Sword,” which should have been a supreme sword martial soul, is declared useless and becomes a laughingstock. Yet no one knows that this mysterious black sword conceals ancient secrets. It can devour the souls of spirit beasts directly and turn them into battle soul power, and it holds a shocking secret that could overturn the continent's entire cultivation system.
From a boy chopping wood in a woodshed in Wutong Town, to awakening his power after his first encounter with a spirit beast in the Blackwind Forest, to stirring up trouble at Sacred Soul Academy, Lin Ye relies on the Ancient Spirit-Devouring Sword's heaven-defying abilities to devour spirit souls and unravel the mysteries of martial souls. He makes friends and faces powerful foes. Not only must he contend with the covetous eyes of the great powers, he must uncover the truth behind his parents' deaths and fight the ancient shadow looming over the continent.
When the label of “useless martial soul” is torn away and the Ancient Spirit-Devouring Sword has drunk its fill of ten thousand souls, Lin Ye will cleave open a heaven-defying path to battle with the sword in his hand, and ask the world: Who says a useless martial soul cannot reach the very top?
