The Translator in Shanghai

Modern languages student Lin Xiaoxiao unexpectedly transmigrates to Shanghai in 1939. Her ability to speak eight languages earns her a forced position as a translator for the Japanese military’s Special Higher Police. Caught between rival factions, she turns language into a blade: using Japanese to mislead the enemy, French to pass secret signals, and local dialects to guide refugees. She hides intelligence between the lines of translated documents and distinguishes truth from lies through the tone of a conversation.

She and Su Wenqing, a Communist underground agent embedded in the Special Higher Police, go from testing each other’s intentions to working seamlessly side by side. The “typist Lin Xiao,” who once only wanted to stay alive, transforms into an invisible fighter weaving a web with words. German codes in a bacteriology lab, Latin passwords hidden in church bells, a missing-item notice in a newspaper advertisement... Every language becomes both her weapon and her medal. When the New Year’s bells ring in unison with the explosion at an arsenal, she finally understands: in turbulent times, the sharpest weapon has never been guns. It is the human heart and the convictions hidden in language.
