Qingwu Town: The Fog That Never Lifts

The fog over Qingwu Town had not lifted in ten years.

On the day Lin Mo inherited the old house, the sound of something being dragged came from the fog, as if someone were hauling chains across the stone road. He pushed open the creaking wooden door and saw the silhouette of a faceless figure on the window paper. In a dusty wooden chest in the attic, the last page of a diary read: “The thing in the cellar is counting footsteps. When it reaches three, don’t breathe.”

At midnight, the townspeople always gathered beneath the old locust tree, murmuring incantations no one understood. The grocer warned him, “Don’t stay in the old house on the night of the full moon, or you’ll see your own shadow smiling.” But when Lin Mo tried to leave, he found a blue-black mark on his arm, like a flower beginning to rot.

Su Qing, a folklorist, arrived with an incomplete ancient text. The evil god’s symbol on its pages was identical to the mark on everyone in town. They pried open the cellar lock. Inside an iron chest lay a female corpse with a bronze dagger lodged in her chest. The instant the dagger was pulled free, the corpse opened her eyes. The ground in Qingwu Town began to split apart, countless hands reached up from below, and the last line of the ancient text slowly appeared: “The sacrifice performed once every hundred years has never lacked a victim. What it lacks is a vessel.”

From the old house to the entire town, from the strange marks to the evil god’s whispers, they thought they were searching for the truth, unaware that they had already stepped into a curse a century in the making. When the fog lifts, will it reveal a way out, or the abyss?
