Set against half a century of upheaval on the Wei River Plain, White Deer Plain unfolds a portrait of a people’s struggle to survive amid the entanglement of family feuds and the tides of history. Its publication not only reshaped the aesthetic landscape of contemporary literature, but also opened new paths for Chinese fiction through its narrative traditions, thematic depth, and formal experimentation, making it a literary landmark that transcends its era.
In its reinvention of narrative tradition, White Deer Plain broke away from the uniform narrative mode of contemporary fiction and built a sweeping framework that fused “historical biography” with “folk narrative.” Chen Zhongshi drew on the narrative wisdom of the Records of the Grand Historian and its biographical structure. Through the life journeys of central characters such as Bai Jiaxuan and Lu San, he linked historical changes from the late Qing and early Republican period to the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
