The heroine Su Jin comes from a family of writers. After her father died young, she was forced to remain anonymous and perform autopsies in a small southern town as "Su Xiaozi". Because of her precise technique, she refused to perform autopsies (for fear of exposing her daughter's body). Her colleagues ridiculed her for "only looking at the surface" and was often ostracized by official officials.
