If Hong Xiuquan is the "spiritual totem" of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, then Yang Xiuqing is the "absolute brain" of this war machine.
Is he illiterate? It doesn't matter, he has a photographic memory. He can immediately understand the overall situation and make accurate judgments after hearing the battle reports and documents read out. From Guangxi to Hunan, from Wuchang to Nanjing, the Taiping Army was devastating, and almost every strategy behind it was deeply imprinted by Yang Xiuqing.
Setting the capital at Tianjing (Nanjing) was his great initiative. Abandoning the northward march to the Qing court seemed conservative, but in fact it established a solid base to confront the Qing Dynasty from north to south.
The Northern Expedition and the Western Expedition were his two-fisted attacks. Although the Northern Expedition failed in the end, it shocked Beijing and Tianjin for a time and made Emperor Xianfeng almost "hunt north"; the Western Expedition consolidated the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and established the Tianjing Pingfan.
He governs the army very strictly, and his laws are like mountains. The tactics he created, such as the "Crab Formation" and "Ambush Formation," stunned the Qing army. Under the command of Yang Xiuqing, the Taiping Army reached the pinnacle of its military career.
During this period, he was the real "uncrowned king" in Tianjing City. He strategizes and manages everything every day. The politics, military, and economy of the kingdom of heaven are all under his control. Even the opponents of the Qing side had to admit: "I am quite familiar with the timing of formations and the situation of mountains and rivers.
