At twenty-two, orphan Wu Dang has just graduated from college and is already struggling to find a job. Lost and helpless on the streets of the city, he is caught in a sudden spatial distortion and swept into the mysterious No. 8 Pawnshop. There, a black-robed shadow that devours light claims the pawnshop can trade in anything, then tempts him with the chance to become its owner: command the pawnshop and arbitrate transactions across the heavens, gaining wealth, power, and even immortality with ease. The price is serving the shadow for all eternity.
Wu Dang refuses, relying on his caution and courage, but discovers that his innate ability to merge with the “spatial key” lets him enter and leave the pawnshop freely. This gives him leverage to negotiate. In the end, he reaches an agreement with the shadow: they will be partners, not master and servant. He will seek pure and powerful souls across the heavens for the shadow, and receive two layers of soul power for every completed transaction. He must also bring back strange treasures from other worlds, and accept the heavy restriction that any betrayal will result in his being sealed away. Thus, he officially becomes the proprietor of No. 8 Pawnshop.
During his travels, he encounters Roger challenging Zhang Dong, Yang Jian battling Two-Faced Sukuna, and a whole series of other amusing incidents.
