Each volume focuses on the core contradiction of a stage (such as the fall of imperial power in the first volume, the collapse of Liaodong in the fifth volume), and the chapters are connected through the fate of the characters (such as Yuan Chonghuan, Li Zicheng, Emperor Chongzhen, Zheng Chenggong) and events (such as the party struggle between Donglin and the eunuch).
