"Moonlight on Wheat Straw Stacks" tells the story of Buckwheat, a girl from Xinghuagou in the Loess Plateau, and Chen Wang, a city photographer, who met by accident on a barren land, and then grew up and went in both directions in the wave of reality.
Nineteen-year-old Buckwheat bears the burden of the family and hides his unwillingness to fate in the wheat straw; Chen Wang breaks in to shoot the material and is moved by her tenacious vitality. The two develop a subtle affection in the collision of ideas, but they break up hastily due to the differences between urban and rural areas.
In the following years, Buckwheat diverted water to open up wasteland amidst doubts and difficulties, recorded the land with Chen Wang's old camera, and led the villagers to build a cooperative; Chen Wang was lost in the city's vanity fair, and it was not until he caught a glimpse of the news about the "Xinghuagou Photography Girl" that he realized that his original intention was still tied to the loess.
The two people who reunited were wrapped up in misunderstandings and barriers, but when they faced the storm together, they let the concerns hidden in time grow into each other's dependence. The moonlight repeatedly filled the wheat straw stacks, illuminating confusion and stubbornness, and finally settled on their backs taking root in the land and running towards the stars, making the spring in Xinghuagou grow long enough in sweat and love.
