The Moonlight on the Haystack tells the story of Qiaomai, a young woman from Xinghuagou on the Loess Plateau, and Chen Wang, a city photographer. They meet by chance on barren land, then grow in their own ways amid the tides of reality, drawn ever closer to each other.
Nineteen-year-old Qiaomai bears the burden of her family and buries her resentment toward fate in a haystack. Chen Wang arrives to shoot photographs and is moved by her stubborn vitality. Their clashing viewpoints give rise to tender feelings, but the divide between city and countryside soon forces them apart.
Over the following years, Qiaomai faces skepticism and hardship as she brings water to the fields and opens up new land. Using the old camera Chen left behind, she documents the land and helps the villagers establish a cooperative. Chen loses himself in the city’s pursuit of fame and fortune. Only when he catches sight of a news story about “the photographer from Xinghuagou” does he realize that his original dream is still tied to that stretch of yellow earth.
When they meet again, misunderstanding and distance surround them. But as they weather hardship together, the longing they have carried through the years grows into a source of strength for them both. Moonlight falls over the haystack again and again, bearing witness to their confusion and stubbornness, until at last it frames their figures as they put down roots in the land and reach for the stars. Through sweat and love, spring in Xinghuagou stretches on and on.
