The Han Dynasty’s Spoils-Sharing Game

From the distinctive perspective of political maneuvering, this book examines four hundred years of power distribution under the Han dynasties. It likens early Han politics to a grand card game, vividly showing how Liu Bang, as the “dealer,” dealt with the “players,” including his meritorious officials and the kings of the vassal states, and revealing the deep tensions between the central government and local powers under the system of commanderies and kingdoms. As the chapters progress, the book delves into Emperor Wu's calculated centralization of power, the rise of Confucian scholars, the unchecked concentration of land, and finally the struggles between powerful consort clans and eunuchs in the Eastern Han and the Partisan Prohibitions. It ends with the warlord separatism unleashed by the Yellow Turban Rebellion, presenting the complete process by which the Han dynasty's power structure was established and then collapsed, and offering a profound account of how institutional design and the distribution of interests shaped the fate of a dynasty.
