Bocchi the Rock!: Kirishima Dustfall, Hitori’s Melody

(One heroine + school life + mutual salvation)

Hitori Gotoh thought her youth would be spent huddled in the corner of her room, talking to her electric guitar and rice-ball wrappers, until the day Kirishima Jin appeared, like a light snowfall settling on her taut guitar strings.

He was a stranger who came across her practicing guitar in the snow at a park. He would crouch beside the bench, brush the snow off her sheet music with his fingertips, and softly say, “Don’t be afraid of getting the syncopation here wrong.” At the entrance to STARRY, he was the boy who shielded her from the surging crowd and pressed a hot drink with a guitar printed on it into her frozen, reddened hands.

She was so socially anxious she had to rehearse conversations with shop clerks in advance, yet she dared to play off-key songs in front of him. He was used to keeping to himself, but began carrying the band’s old equipment to the foot of her building, saying, “We’re short a vocalist. Want to give it a try?”

When Hitori’s guitar finally stopped trembling, and little cat doodles she had drawn appeared on Kirishima Jin’s sheet music, the two shy souls suddenly understood: rock isn’t about being deafening. It’s about someone willing to turn your loneliness into a melody that resonates with you.
