Bells Ring Across Chu

[Political intrigue] + [History] + [Forbidden love] + [Nation and family]

He was the last guardian of the Zhou rites. She was Chu’s sharpest hidden blade.

A political marriage bound the fates of Zeng Hou Yi and the Chu princess Mi Ying together. He cast the Nine Tripod Cauldrons and tuned the chime bells, wielding ritual and music as weapons while protecting the dying embers of civilization amid the rival states. She studied the stars at night and secretly relayed military intelligence, a dagger in her father’s hand aimed at the state of Zeng.

But when the “correct pitch” of the chime bells became law, when the movement of the stars became coded intelligence, and when the fifth pitch, zhi, always strayed a fraction out of tune, they realized they had long been hearing thunder in the silence between them.

He was her lord; she was his spy. He sought to restore the way of Zhou; she sought to destroy Zeng.

Yet that night, in a broken tent by the river, he recited the Book of Songs to her. She said, “If there is another life, let us be two people playing chime stones beside the Luo River.”

He replied, “Playing chime stones would be lovely. But we must still ring the bells. For you, I’ll ring the sound of peace for a lifetime.”

Then he sounded the “Great Martial” and led his entire army to their deaths beneath the bells.

Two thousand years later, archaeologists discovered fragments of silver foil inside a chime bell. On them was written: “Yi was no marquis, no lord, only a guardian of the Zhou rites. Chu Ying was no spy, no queen. Could she be the one who shared my path?”

It turned out the deepest betrayal was love, and the most heroic sacrifice for one’s country was to let the other live.
