Beyond Performance Reviews

In Pulan City, the provincial capital of Pulan Province, the rush to take goods overseas runs alongside the hidden currents of a close-knit society. At the Lanshi Group’s midyear meeting, a single announcement declares a “transformation.” Major shareholder’s nephew Cheng Qi is promoted three times in as many months, while marketing vice president Ke Xiu uses the line “Don’t take things too far” to smooth the way for power. Shen Yining, a small-town exam ace, is labeled a “process person,” but her obsession with archiving turns vague impressions from banquets, corridors, and garages into verifiable facts. By combining access records, itineraries, and expenses into a single body of evidence, she shifts public opinion away from “private morality” and back to “economic issues.” With the backing of risk control director Gu Hanzhou and HR’s Zhang Mengying moving from “keeping things stable” to “following the evidence,” no-contact orders, evidence preservation, supplier comparisons and integrity clauses, and public review meetings are gradually put in place. Board secretary Liu Zhi stops suppressing drafts and shifts to “limited alliances,” while provincial-level integrated media and regulatory inquiries set the boundaries of external accountability.

The four-volume story moves through “fractures, counterattacks, collapse, and order”: witnesses waver, PR teams whitewash, off-book accounts are exposed, disciplinary inspectors and police step in, and the board votes on a governance package. The System goes live, and resistance resurfaces. Ke Xiu is transferred for prosecution and ultimately sentenced. Cheng Qi is sent away but still manages to stir up trouble. Qin Sheng tries to save herself with a “transparent list,” while Xu Nian makes a dignified exit. The realistic ending leaves some matters unresolved: power is not made into a myth, and justice does not depend on a halo. Victory takes the form of “processes becoming a protective wall for the majority.” Beyond Performance is an ensemble workplace story about boundaries and evidence, money and choices. Some leave the stage, some grow, and more ordinary people learn to stand firm in a System where success need not depend on luck.
