Shan Fu is a ginkgo tree spirit in poor health. He has always lived in a small town, where his daily routine consists of basking in the sun and drinking tea. He shares his home with Qi Xingle, a human he found on a night of torrential rain.
They lived together in the town for more than twenty years. Their life was peaceful and uneventful, but happy. Then one day, Qi Xingle told Shan Fu he wanted to join the Jigong and make a name for himself in the world.
Shan Fu gladly agreed and chose to go with him. Together, they solved one case after another. Qi Xingle also discovered that Shan Fu was no ordinary being.
In the days that followed, they learned about an event that had shaken all of Shenzhou more than a decade earlier: an entire town had been slaughtered. Because it happened in the little town of Xiaoshitang, people came to call it the “Xiaoshitang Massacre.”
As they investigated, the truth about that fateful day gradually came to light, and Qi Xingle learned the truth about why he had been abandoned.
“Every winter, you suffer so badly. If I hadn’t come, could you have endured it? You never should have had to go through this!”
“Your Highness, when will you come back?”
“Impudent! How dare you imprison that royal personage!”
“Shan Fu, why didn’t you tell me the truth? Why won’t you speak to me?”
“That was a white-haired demon,” said someone who had witnessed the massacre. “The demon was kneeling in the rain, surrounded by corpses, piles and piles of corpses! He just sat there quietly,”
