Green Lanterns and Neon Lights

Su Wan, an advertising planner crushed by workplace manipulation and heartbreak, dragged her exhausted luggage into an ancient temple in the city, hoping to hide from life's storms amid incense and lamplight. Chen Lechen, a disciple of Jingci Temple clad in monk's robes and holding a sutra, had entered the monastic life ten years earlier after losing a loved one, treating the precepts as a shell to shield himself from pain.

A chance encounter in the Sutra Library, fingertips brushing beneath the morning bell, late-night chats over vegetarian food at a convenience store, ginger tea and a note when she came down with a fever: little by little, an inappropriate bond formed between two people from different worlds. She boldly tested him: “Can you swear your heart is before the Buddha?” He avoided answering, yet when she suffered acute gastritis, he broke his precepts and left the temple to stay by her side until dawn. The world urged her to give up, and a second male lead surrounded her with kindness, yet she still clutched the words he had written, “After the rain, the sky turns blue,” and refused to let go.

The kiss beneath the ancient locust tree in the moonlight marked the beginning of his precepts crumbling and the opening chapter of their painful love. He fled in panic; she wept in the rain. At their farewell at the temple gate, his words, “The bond between us was always an illusion,” became a chasm between the temple's lamplight and the city's neon glow. But the Buddha teaches that cultivation happens in the world. In the end, he took off his robes and, after a year of reflection and acceptance, went to Shanghai to find her. They met again at the pitch presentation she was hosting, and he handed her a calligraphy scroll inscribed with the words, “I'm back.”

It turned out that the stillness of the temple lamp and the bustle of neon were never opposites. True cultivation wasn't hiding in an ancient temple copying sutras, but holding the hand of the one you love and making every ordinary day into a “Buddha's Pure Land on Earth” for each other.
