Scab

"Scab" is a suspenseful thriller that combines folk horror legends with Cthulhu-style despair. The story is set in the 1970s and 1980s. Chen Jianguo, a retired criminal police officer, was ordered to investigate the serial disappearances in Fenghuangling Village, but found himself falling into an abyss of horror beyond cognition. In this closed mountain village, the ancient New Year painting "Seventy-Two Phases of Hell" is not a dead thing, but a living curse. It is so hungry and thirsty that it needs flesh and blood as its paint and human skin as its canvas. During the investigation, Chen Jianguo met Lin Wanjun, a folklorist who was carrying a secret, and encountered the village guard Wang Zhishu, who was both good and evil. He even discovered that the scar on his forehead was the mark of the "night watchman" for generations. As the investigation progressed, horrifying incidents such as walking corpses at night, resurrections in blood pools, and industrial dens in third-tier factories broke out one after another. Chen Jianguo gradually realized that he had been involved in a horrific reincarnation that spanned hundreds of years. The novel builds a dark universe nested layer by layer through the three core settings of "Painter's Bloodline", "Night Watchman's Brand" and "Eye of Return to Ruins". From the countryside to the factory, from reality to another world, the protagonist struggles to survive on the edge of the crumbling sanity, and finally faces the ultimate choice at the core of the flesh-and-blood star: to become a container of curse, or to awaken into a more terrifying existence. "Scab" is not only a spine-chilling horror story, but also a profound metaphor about the inheritance of memory and historical trauma. When ancient taboos collide with modern rationality, the truth is often more terrifying than ghosts.
