Synopsis of Summer Crossing at Hexi
Amid the cicadas’ July chorus, Jiang Heng and Huang Xing are sent to the countryside under a government policy and arrive in Hexi Village, where they meet locals Qiu Dingjie and Li Peien. Their first encounter beneath the old locust tree by the ferry crossing, and the work they share in the fields, deepen the bond between all four amid the rhythms of rural life. Steady and reserved, Jiang Heng quietly turns his gaze toward the lonely, cold Li Peien, while lively Huang Xing cheerfully chases after the outgoing Qiu Dingjie.
As their time in the countryside draws to a close, Jiang Heng defies his family’s summons and insists on staying in Hexi Village, just to remain by Li Peien’s side. Huang Xing, however, has no choice but to return home under pressure from his family. In the hurried confusion before they part, Huang Xing fails to express the feelings weighing on his heart. They become a misunderstanding that Qiu Dingjie cannot resolve, leaving this summer-born friendship tinged with regret and longing when they say goodbye.
